Good point, which is why we always say "YOU are the expert on your on ministry." We can make suggestions but ulitmately we each have to discern what is best for our own context. Thanks for commenting.

great ideas but I don't think it works for everyone. We've tried this method and it opens the door for strange topics and no organization. not to mention the leaders prepare less than they should.

Just a thought on a certain teacher leading one workshop several weeks in a row:

We have used this model in our Children's Ministry program over the past couple of years now. The problem is that leaders know many kids superficially (if at all). When it is one leader matched up with no more than 12 students on an ongoing basis, they get to know each student very well and the relationship deepens.

We also are losing leaders because they dont feel like they have solid relationships with the students to keep them here.

Just a thought...

Great Blog....if you haven't already done so, ya'll may wish to explore Christopher Schlect's book, "A Critique of Modern Youth Ministry." He's done a great job of exploring the origin of Sunday Schools/Youth Groups, and pointing out why the fruit of these groups is very often not-so-sweet. Thanks so much for rethinking these topics along more biblically sound lines.

Hi Joel. Wow! 60-70 middle schoolers. You've got a challenge on your hands. First of all, it may seem obvious, but in my opinion you don't have one group there but about 6 small groups. An adapted workshop rotation model would actually work really well with a large bunch of teens like that. You could teach one theme or story or text a month, and have the students rotate each week into a different workshop. Leadership is easier in this way as the "teacher" leads the same workshop several weeks in a row (so less prep time needed) and it allows you to tap the gifts of lots of adults in your congregation.

thanks so much for this post...i thought it was super helpful.

one issue that i have, though, is that i work with a large group of students on sunday mornings (usually about 60-70 middle schoolers). while i can see many of these ideas working really well with smaller groups, i'm still struggling with translating them into this large group setting. does anyone have thoughts/ideas/insights for outside the box approaches for groups that large? thanks!
